Step into the heart of Würzburg’s wine culture with the city’s most iconic ritual: sipping Franconian wine atop the historic Old Main Bridge (Alte Mainbrücke). This enchanting 15th-century pedestrian bridge, lined with grand Baroque statues, offers a front-row seat to the city’s most breathtaking panorama—gaze out over the shimmering Main River, the vine-clad slopes, and the commanding Marienberg Fortress perched above the skyline.
With each glass of crisp Silvaner or elegant Riesling—poured from the region’s signature Bocksbeutel bottle—you’ll soak up not just the flavors of Franconia, but also the lively spirit of Würzburg. The bridge buzzes with locals and travelers alike, all partaking in the beloved “Brückenschoppen” tradition: wine in hand, laughter in the air, and unforgettable views in every direction.
Purchase your wine from the inviting bars and wine shops at either end of the bridge (glass deposit required and refunded on return), then mingle with the crowd or find your own perfect vantage point. As the sun sets behind the fortress and the city lights begin to twinkle, the bridge transforms into a magical gathering place—ideal for photos, conversation, and pure enjoyment.

About the wine
Franconian wine, especially from Würzburg, is celebrated for its unique character shaped by the region’s distinctive terroir and centuries-old winemaking tradition. The vineyards along the Main River benefit from mineral-rich soils—particularly Muschelkalk (shell limestone)—and a mild, continental climate, which together produce wines with remarkable minerality and freshness. The region’s flagship grape is Silvaner, widely regarded as producing its best expressions here, alongside Müller-Thurgau, Riesling, and Bacchus. Most Franconian wines are dry and are easily recognized by their traditional Bocksbeutel bottle, a squat, rounded flask that is a symbol of local pride and quality
Würzburg is home to some of the most famous vineyards in Germany, such as the Würzburger Stein, which has produced legendary wines like the historic 1540 Steinwein vintage. The majority of Franconian wines are made from a single grape variety rather than blends, and the exact vineyard site (Lage) is considered nearly as important as the winery itself. While basic wines are best enjoyed young for their fruitiness and freshness, the finest dry Spätlesen can mature beautifully for up to a decade. This deep-rooted wine culture, combined with the scenic.
